Newsletter Archive

The first newsletters we have are from 1876. These were about 30 pages long, but only the first few pages were specific to St Giles, the subsequent pages are Christian articles, advice, even children's stories, that, together with the local pages, made a magazine. We do not have copies of newsletters between 1891 and 1912. However, for 1912-1915 we have copies of newsletters which were bound into three books, and given, by the vicar, to the Misses Gray for Christmas.

By December 1876, the clergy reflects on the long format of the magazine:

Turn to the January number of our Magazine and see what we declared to be the " policy " of the local pages of our " New Year's venture.'' !t was to be a bond of union for the parishioners of S. Giles and S. Peter, and it was to be a means of communication between the Clergy and the people.
Now that we have reached December we ask the question, Have we succeeded in our attempt ? And the answer is uncertain, Yes
and No.
The Magazine has been useful to many, it has stirred some interest in the short and simple annals of our daily life.
The records of Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths have been read with attention and sympathy by some. Again, the Clergy have
made their occasional reports upon the state of the Choir, the Missionary Association, and the organization of the Parish, and these reports have been received and made use of by some. So far we have succeeded. But then we have failed to reach a great many, our Subscribers are few, and we can never feel sure that our words when they are written will come under the eyes of those for whom they are especially intended; and again, the Magazine has been financially a loss. It will, no doubt always be a certain expense to issue a
Magazine or Parish Paper, but it need not be both an expense and also of limited circulation.

We propose therefore with the New Year to make a new venture, and to issue a monthly paper of local matter only, which will be sent to every house in the Parish. No charge will be made for it, but we shall be thankful if those
who can afford it will help in the cost of printing, by a subscription of five shillings, half-a-crown, or even a shilling a year.
