St Giles' Church
The history of St Giles' church goes back at least to the time of William the Conqueror, if not before. The current building was completed in 1875 but includes parts of the original church, as well as monuments, furnishings and decorative features spanning many centuries. The beautiful interior was added to by designers such as Ninian Comper and Charles Eamer Kempe. The stained glass windows along the aisles show a person from each century, many are saints, others are people simply thought to be worthy of being in a window. There are information leaflets and details around the church, as well as some books with more information.
The history of the church (back to William the Conqueror) is described here, the interior decoration and furnishings are described here, this link describes how stained glass is made, the history of stained glass, and what can been seen in St Giles. In the church there are also some "I spy" leaflets which are not only great for kids, but get everyone looking at the church in more detail.
With thanks
Much of the work on the restoration of St Giles has been made possible through funding by the National Lottery Heritage Fund
